Discovering the Wines of the South Coast

Verdant and lush, the landscape of the South Coast of NSW is ideal not only for fantastic hiking, biking, and other outdoor adventures, it is also prime real estate for creating incredible wines. There is so much to do in this region, and one activity not to be missed is sampling many of the local flavours at the region’s wineries. Here is a quick guide to discovering the wines of the South Coast. You’ll especially want to mark your calendar for the Shoalhaven Coast Winter Wine Festival on from June 11-13.

Silos Estate Winery

“Tracing its history back to 1870, Silos Estate has been producing a range of premium wines that emphasise the unique characteristics of the Shoalhaven region while its Wileys Creek label sources fruit from other wine growing regions in Australia.

Situated between the mountains and the coast, approximately 12 acres of vineyard have been planted with seven varieties of grapes: Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec which are sold under Silos Estate brand. The vineyard is not irrigated, taking advantage of the local climate, with cool, moderate, sea breezes during the ripening period, allowing the grapes’ entire characters to fully develop.”

Coolangatta Estate

Established on the site of the region’s first European settlement, Coolangatta Estate makes the most of the region’s maritime climate to produce 5 star wines. Crisp, fruity wines are produced, including Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Among the vineyard’s medium bodied red wines are Chambourcin and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s cellar door is open daily for tasting and they have a variety of simple food options to pair with your glass.

Mountain Ridge Wines

This spot is known not just for lovely wines, but for incredible 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside. Mountain Ridge Wines is a great destination for wine lovers and travellers. The cellar door is open 7 days a week for tastings, and there is also a restaurant onsite. In addition to wine varietals such as Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir, cider and beer are produced here as well.

Cambewarra Estate

Cambewarra Estate is a large enterprise and very popular stop for wine lovers in the Shoalhaven. Set on gorgeous property, the estate offers tastings and special events. Wines produced here include Chardonnay, Verdelho, Rosé, Chambourcin and Port.
