The Australian Backpacker Bucket List: Jervis Bay

The Australian Backpacker Bucket List: Jervis Bay

Are you currently backpacking through Australia? Maybe you’re just in the research stage, compiling an awesome itinerary for epic travels to come. Either way, you probably know there’s a sort of unspoken bucket list for backpacking Australia. It includes chilling out on Bondi Beach, cruising the Whitsundays, camper vanning to the iconic Red Centre of the Outback, holding a koala, and more. But what you might not have realised is that Jervis Bay is one destination down under that can tick all the boxes. If you’re completing the Aussie backpacker bucket list, check out what you can do here in beautiful Jervis Bay NSW.

See the World’s Whitest Sand

Some of the globe’s best beaches are found in Australia. In fact, Australia’s beaches are consistently receiving awards and accolades because they’re just that good. Well, one of the top spots is right here in Jervis Bay. Our beaches are glorious, with incredible aquamarine water, stunning views, and, in the case of the lovely Hyams Beach, some of the world’s whitest sand. Come relax on the shoreline and see for yourself. You’ll never want to leave!

Idyllic Coastal Camping

Travelling in Australia demands certain outdoor experiences. With such a big country boasting plenty of wide open space, camping is outstanding here. You can go for a bit of “free-camping” on an Australian road trip, or stay at any number of terrific designated campsites. One of the best in NSW is right here in Jervis Bay, in the Booderee National Park. There are several different options for camping in the park, all in natural settings and often just steps from the gorgeous beaches. Cave Beach is great for surfing (another Aussie bucket list item!) while campsites at Green Patch are often visited by friendly wallabies.

Drink Tasty Australian Wines

Australia is home to verdant produce and this means delicious wines. Sampling the local varietals on your backpacking adventure is great fun. And does anything feel classier than a wine tasting? In the greater Jervis Bay region you’ll find several different wineries which have their cellar doors open for tastings. Take a guided winery tour or build your own itinerary using our list of some of the area’s top wine spots. Bring some extra cash so you can take a bottle of your favourite home for later.

Go Whale Watching

Wildlife is an essential part of the backpacking experience in Australia. From kangaroos and koalas to crocs and quokkas, seeing our incredible, unique species up close and in person is truly amazing. There may be no better place to do this than Jervis Bay. Here you’ll have a front row seat for the annual migration of the southern hemisphere humpback whales. Our whale watching cruises run throughout the winter months and depart daily.

Whale watching not your thing? We’ve got other cruising options 365 days per year. Our most popular is our dolphin eco tour, which introduces you to our 70+ resident bottlenose dolphins. They swim alongside our boat splashing and jumping and giving you a terrific wildlife experience you just can’t get elsewhere.
