We love our patch of the Humpback Highway. But every so often something runs a little further up the coast that we think our whale watchers should know about. This is one of them.

About an hour north of Jervis Bay, a limited Indigenous whale watching cruise is running out of Shellharbour this season. This is a Shellharbour cruise, run by our friends at Shellharbour Wild, departing from Shellharbour Marina, not from Fishermens Wharf.

Here is why, and how to catch it while the dates are open.

What it is (and where it leaves from)

This is not a standard sightseeing run. Over two hours on the water, it pairs the Yuin people’s ancient connection to the whale with the marine science that studies the same migration today. Storytelling, songlines and a smoking ceremony sit alongside contemporary whale research. Two ways of knowing the humpback, told side by side.

The important details for planning a trip:

Departs: Shellharbour Marina, 13 Marina Drive, Shell Cove. That is roughly an hour up the coast from Jervis Bay.

Duration: around two hours aboard the Cat Balou, a purpose built catamaran.

When: limited dates only, inside the May to November whale season.

Run by: Shellharbour Wild, with Gumaraa Aboriginal Experience and researcher Dr Jodi Edwards.

If you are coming from Sydney or Canberra, Shellharbour sits a little closer than we do, so it can make an easy day trip in its own right, or a good reason to make a weekend of the south coast.

The people who make it what it is

The reason we rate this cruise is who leads it. The culture is shared by the people it belongs to, not narrated from a script.

Gumaraa Aboriginal Experience, founded by Richard Campbell with co-owner Lisa Bazzano, shares culture and the smoking ceremony on board. Gumaraa works across the Dharawal and Yuin Nations of this coast.

Dr Jodi Edwards, a University of Wollongong whale researcher and a Yuin woman, brings both the science of the migration and knowledge of the Indigenous whale songlines of this coast.

That combination is genuinely rare. It is the sort of morning that stays with you.

How it differs from a cruise with us

Plenty of people do both, and they are not the same experience.

With us on Jervis Bay, our whale and dolphin cruises run daily through the season, out among the sea cliffs, sea caves and the resident bottlenose dolphins of the bay. It is the classic Jervis Bay day on the water.

The Shellharbour Indigenous whale watching cruise is a slower, story led experience on select dates only, built around Yuin culture and whale science rather than the sightseeing loop.

If whales are the reason you keep coming back to this coast, they make a great pair across a weekend. Us one day, the cultural cruise up north on one of its rare dates.

As always with any cruise, the whales are wild and no one can promise a sighting. What is guaranteed on this one is the cultural experience and the people leading it.

Catching the Indigenous whale watching cruise before the dates run out

Because the cultural cruise only runs when Gumaraa and Dr Edwards are aboard, the dates are few and they release as they are confirmed. When one goes up, it tends to fill. So if it appeals, book the date that is open rather than waiting for the ideal weekend.

You book this one directly with Shellharbour Wild. Check their upcoming dates and reserve your spot on their Aboriginal Cultural Whale Cruise page.

And when you are ready for a day on Jervis Bay itself, you know where to find us.

If you are picking one week of the year to be in Jervis Bay, the July school holidays are a very good choice. This is the middle of whale season. Humpbacks are tracking north past the bay in numbers, the water is clear, the beaches are empty, and the town is yours.

Here is what to book, what to bring, and how to get the most out of it with kids in tow.

The whale cruise is the main event

July sits right in the busiest stretch of the northern migration. Thousands of humpbacks are moving up the coast to warmer breeding waters, and Jervis Bay sits directly on their route. The continental shelf runs close to shore here, which brings the whales in close to the cliffs rather than keeping them far offshore.

Our Whale Cruise runs two hours and heads out towards the towering sea cliffs and ancient sea caves where the whales pass. It departs 10am and 1pm daily through the school holidays, including public holidays.

What you are watching for:

The blow. A misty spout on the surface. It is usually the first sign, and kids love being the one to spot it.

The tail. A fluke lifting as a whale arches over into a deep dive.

The breach. The whole animal launching clear of the water. There is nothing else like it.

Our crew are on this water every day of the season. They know where the whales have been tracking and where to point the boat, so your time is spent watching whales rather than hunting for them.

The dolphins are here every single day

Jervis Bay has a resident pod of more than 100 bottlenose dolphins, and they do not migrate anywhere. They live here.

Our Dolphin Cruise runs all year, every day. It is the gentler cruise, it is brilliant with younger children, and the dolphins genuinely come to play, surfing the bow and racing alongside the boat. If you have got a five year old who will not last two hours, this is the one.

Plenty of families do both across a couple of days. Whales one morning, dolphins the next.

Whale watching with kids, done well

A cruise with children is easy when you come prepared.

Dress them warmer than you think. It is cooler out on the water than it is on shore. Jackets, jumpers and beanies. You can always peel a layer off.

Sunglasses and sunscreen. Winter glare comes off the water and catches people who did not expect it.

Give them a job. Kids told to spot the blow stay glued to the horizon. It turns them from passengers into crew.

Take the 10am if you can. Mornings are often glassy, which makes everything easier and more comfortable.

Bring a camera with a bit of zoom. Phones work, but the reach helps.

If anyone in the family is prone to seasickness, take something before you leave home rather than at the wharf. It needs a little time to work.

Two and a half hours from Sydney or Canberra

Huskisson is about two and a half hours from both cities, which makes this one of the easiest school holiday trips going. No flights, no long haul, no hours of complaints from the back seat.

Coming for the day? Take the 10am cruise, have lunch in town afterwards, walk the beach and drive home in the light. Staying a night or two? Spread it out and do both cruises.

We depart from the terminal inside Fishermens Wharf, 15 Field Street, Huskisson. Check in 30 minutes before your cruise time.

The rest of the day in Huskisson

Huskisson in winter is quiet, walkable and completely uncrowded. Everything sits close to the water, so once you have parked, you can leave the car where it is.

Worth doing:

Walk Collingwood Beach, which runs straight off the edge of town

Take the White Sands Walk from Greenfield Beach through to Hyams

Eat somewhere warm afterwards. The food here is good and in July you will walk straight in

Keep watching the water from the shore. Whales are often spotted from the headlands too

Easy parking, empty sand, and a bay that looks every bit as good in July as it does in January. You just want a jacket.

Planning summer instead?

Our warm-water cruises come back from November, when the bay turns on its other side. Summer boom netting in the ocean spa, Sandy Stops out to remote beaches you cannot drive to, and the Jervis Bay Passage past Point Perpendicular and Hyams Beach. Worth putting in the diary.

Book your July school holidays cruise

School holiday mornings are our busiest departures, and the whales are at their peak right now. Lock your day in.

Book a whale cruise or book a dolphin cruise

It is the question we get most often at the booking desk. Not “will we see whales”, but “which cruise should I take, the morning or the afternoon?”

The best time to see whales in Jervis Bay is really about the kind of day you want, because our 10am and 1pm cruises each have their own character. Both run daily through the season. Both put you among the same humpbacks. Here is what our crew would tell you about each.

The 10am cruise

Winter mornings on this coast often start still and glassy, and there is something special about heading out onto flat, quiet water with the light coming up over the bay.

Calm water also makes the whales easier to pick up. A humpback gives itself away with a blow, the misty spout it pushes out when it surfaces, and on a smooth sea you can spot one from a long way off. Fins, fluke prints and the arch of a back all read beautifully on a still morning.

The morning cruise also leaves your whole afternoon free in Huskisson, which is why a lot of day trippers take it.

The 1pm cruise

The afternoon has its own advantages, and plenty of regulars will not take anything else.

The light. Afternoon sun sitting behind you is lovely for photography, especially with the Beecroft Peninsula cliffs as a backdrop.

The warmth. The air has had all day to come up, which makes it a very comfortable cruise in the middle of winter.

The start. Huskisson is about two and a half hours from Sydney and from Canberra. The 1pm lets you drive down at a civilised hour, have lunch in town, and still be on the water the same day.

Either way, our crew are out on this water every single day of the season. They know where the whales have been tracking and where to point the boat, morning or afternoon.

June and July are the peak of the northern migration

Timing your day is one thing. Timing your season matters too, and right now we are in the thick of it.

The northern migration runs May to August. The whales are travelling with purpose, heading for warmer breeding waters, and it is the most powerful stretch of the year to be on the water:

Steady traffic past the bay, day after day

Fast, dramatic behaviour: tail slaps, pec slaps, full breaches

The chance of a heat run, where several males chase a female at speed. It is loud, chaotic and unforgettable

From September the whales come back south with newborn calves and the cruises turn into slower, closer encounters. Both halves of the season are wonderful. They are simply different.

What to bring in winter

It is cooler on the water than it is in the car park, so come prepared and you will be very comfortable.

A weather jacket or jumper, plus a beanie

Sunglasses and sunscreen. Winter glare off the water is stronger than people expect

Drinking water

A camera with some zoom, if you have one

So what is the best time to see whales in Jervis Bay?

Honestly, whichever one gets you on the boat. The 10am gives you still water and a free afternoon. The 1pm gives you warmth, good light and an easier drive down. Both are two hours out among the migration with a crew who love it.

We depart from the terminal inside Fishermens Wharf, 15 Field Street, Huskisson. Check in 30 minutes before your cruise time.

Canberra is the only Australian capital without a coastline. It is also one of the easiest cities in the country to go whale watching from, because the humpbacks come to you.

Every year from May, tens of thousands of them travel north along the New South Wales coast. Whale watching near Canberra puts you within easy reach of two of them, and we run both: Batemans Bay Wild and Jervis Bay Wild.

Whale watching near Canberra, from two bays

Batemans Bay Wild

Batemans Bay sits at the end of the Kings Highway, on the coast Canberrans have been driving to for generations. Our Batemans Bay whale watching tour leaves from the middle of town and runs for two hours.

You head out aboard Sensational, a rigid inflatable vessel built for speed, stability and manoeuvrability, tracking the coastline where the whales pass close to shore. Our crew share the local marine life, the landscape and the history of the area as you go.

Cruises depart daily from the Public Pontoon at 12 Clyde Street, opposite the Bridge Plaza on the waterfront, with parking about 100 metres away. Arrive 30 minutes before departure.

Jervis Bay Wild

A little further up the coast is Huskisson, about two and a half hours from Canberra. Our Jervis Bay whale cruise also runs two hours, heading out towards the towering sea cliffs and ancient sea caves of the Beecroft Peninsula.

Jervis Bay is a marine park with some of the clearest water in the country, so the cruise tends to become a broader wildlife day. Fur seals haul out on the rocks, sea eagles work the cliffs, and a resident pod of more than 100 bottlenose dolphins lives here year round and loves to surf the bow.

Cruises depart 10am and 1pm daily, including public holidays, from the terminal inside Fishermens Wharf at 15 Field Street. Check in 30 minutes before your cruise time.

One migration, two bays

Both cruises put you among the same humpbacks on the same journey up the coast. Two hours on the water, an experienced crew who are out there every day of the season, and a genuine chance to watch one of the great wildlife events on the planet happen right in front of you.

Some Canberrans have a favourite. Plenty do both across a season, because they are different bays, different boats and different days out. Whichever you choose, you are on the water with us.

When the season runs

Whale season on the South Coast runs from around May through to November, and it comes in two halves.

May to August, the northern migration. Humpbacks heading for warmer breeding waters. Lean, fast and travelling with purpose. This is when you see tail slaps, pec slaps, full breaches, and sometimes a heat run, where several males chase a female at speed.

September to November, the southern migration. The whales come back down with newborn calves alongside them, and they slow right down. Encounters run longer, closer and more playful.

Both halves are worth the drive. They are simply different shows.

What to bring

It is always cooler on the water than it is in the car park.

A weather jacket or a jumper, and a beanie

Sunglasses and sunscreen. Winter glare off the water is stronger than people expect

Drinking water

A camera with a bit of zoom, if you have one

Make a day of it

Both towns are built for exactly this kind of trip. Batemans Bay puts you on the Clyde River with the beaches and the oysters right there. Huskisson gives you white sand, Collingwood Beach off the edge of town, and good food a short walk from the wharf.

Either way, you can be back in Canberra the same evening.

Book your cruise

The season is short and the weekends fill early. Pick your bay and lock the day in.

It’s no secret we love whales here at Jervis Bay Wild. Every year between May and November, one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on the planet plays out right off our doorstep in Huskisson. Tens of thousands of humpback whales travel up and down Australia’s east coast on a route known affectionately as the Humpback Highway, and we have one of the best front-row seats in the country.

Here’s what makes this annual migration so special, and why Jervis Bay has become such a celebrated whale watching destination.

What Is the Humpback Highway?

The Humpback Highway is the unofficial name for the migration route humpbacks follow along Australia’s east coast each year. Whales travel between their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica and their winter breeding grounds in the warm tropical waters off Queensland. The round trip is roughly 10,000 kilometres, making it one of the longest mammal migrations on the planet, and east coast humpbacks complete it almost every year of their adult lives.

The route runs north along the NSW coast from May, then back south from September through November. Jervis Bay sits squarely in the middle of this corridor.

Humpbacks don’t actually feed during the migration. They survive instead on the thick blubber reserves they build up gorging on Antarctic krill over summer. A single adult can pack away as much as 1.5 tonnes of krill in a day before the long swim north begins.

Two Halves of One Incredible Journey

The Northern Migration (May to August)

The first half of the season is fast and purposeful. Whales travelling north are leaner and on a mission to reach their breeding and calving grounds. Sightings often involve small pods of two to four whales cruising steadily past the bay, with the occasional dramatic display from competing males. This is the “go-go-go” phase of the migration, and the energy on the water reflects it.

The Southern Migration (September to November)

The return leg is where Jervis Bay really shines. By spring, whales are heading south with newborn calves, and our deep, sheltered bay is an ideal place for mothers and calves to rest along the way. Sightings tend to be longer, closer, and far more interactive, with curious calves sometimes approaching the boat and plenty of breaching, tail slapping, and pec slapping on display. If you want maximum action and time with the whales, September to November is a fantastic window.

Why Jervis Bay Is a Prime Whale Watching Spot

Plenty of places along the east coast offer whale watching. So what makes Jervis Bay special?

Geography and Depth

The continental shelf sits relatively close to shore here, funnelling migrating whales closer to land than in many other regions. Sightings often happen within sight of the coastline, so you don’t have to travel huge distances offshore to find them.

Sheltered Waters and a Protected Marine Park

Jervis Bay is a large, naturally protected bay with calmer conditions than the open ocean. It sits within Jervis Bay Marine Park, an area known for outstanding biodiversity, which is why a whale cruise here often turns into a much broader wildlife experience. Alongside the humpbacks you’ll usually spot resident bottlenose dolphins, Australian fur seals lounging on rocky outcrops, and a variety of sea birds.

Clear Water and Dramatic Coastline

The water clarity in Jervis Bay regularly ranks among the highest in the country, and the surrounding coastline of towering sea cliffs, ancient sea caves, and white sand beaches gives every cruise a stunning backdrop.

Easy to Reach From Sydney and Canberra

One of Jervis Bay’s great practical advantages is just how accessible it is. The drive from Sydney takes around 2.5 hours, and Canberra is closer at roughly 2 hours. That makes it one of the easiest world-class whale watching destinations to reach as a weekend getaway, or even a long day trip if you set off early.

A Conservation Comeback Story

Worth a quick mention: the whales we see today are part of a remarkable conservation comeback. Humpback populations along Australia’s east coast were hunted to near extinction during the 20th century, dropping to just a few hundred animals before commercial whaling ended in the 1960s. Today, the east Australian population is estimated at around 40,000 animals and still growing. Our skippers and guides follow strict whale watching regulations, keeping the vessel at the right distance and allowing whales to approach us on their own terms.

Make a Weekend of It

Our whale cruises run for between two and three hours, leaving plenty of time to explore the wider Shoalhaven region. A few favourites from our team:

Jervis Bay is one of those places that looks incredible at any time of day. But as the afternoon light softens and the sky starts to change colour, something special happens out on the water. If you are planning a trip to the South Coast and wondering where to catch the sunset, we might be a little biased, but we think the best seat in the house is on board one of our sunset cruises.
Here is everything you need to know.

Watch the Sunset from the Water

There is something about watching a Jervis Bay sunset from the water that you simply cannot get from the shore. As the sky turns gold and the light dances across the bay, you are right in the middle of it all. No car parks, no crowds, just you, the water, and one of the most beautiful coastlines in New South Wales.
At Jervis Bay Wild, we run two sunset cruise options from Huskisson, and they offer quite different experiences depending on what you are after.

Sundowner Cruise

If you are looking for something relaxed and close to nature, the Sundowner Cruise is for you. This 2 hour cruise takes you along the tranquil waters of Currambene Creek on board our pontoon boat, winding through the Australian bush as the sun goes down. Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea eagles, kingfishers, kookaburras, pelicans, and the occasional kangaroo watching curiously from the bank. BYO drinks and nibbles and simply enjoy the ride. It runs November through to May, departing from Huskisson Wharf.

Sundowners Bay Cruise

For something a little more expansive, the Sundowners Bay Cruise takes you out onto Jervis Bay itself for a 3 hour evening on the water. Watch the sun set over the bay, keep an eye out for our resident bottlenose dolphins, and enjoy some nibbles on board. A cheese plate or prawns and oysters are available to purchase, or you are welcome to bring your own. This one runs on Saturdays from November to May, departing from Fishermens Wharf in Huskisson.

Or Stay Ashore at Fishermens Wharf

Not quite ready to get on the water? Our very own Fishermens Wharf cafe and restaurant sits right on the Huskisson Wharf with some of the finest waterfront views in Jervis Bay. Open Friday and Saturday nights during the warmer months, it is a great spot to settle in with a drink and watch the evening light change over the bay. With an emphasis on fresh local seafood and a relaxed atmosphere, it makes a lovely start or end to any day in Huskisson. And if you do decide to book a sunset cruise while you are there, you are already in exactly the right place.

The Perfect Autumn Evening

March is actually a wonderful time to experience a Jervis Bay sunset cruise. The summer crowds have eased, the water is still warm, and the autumn light is soft and golden in a way that makes everything look a little more beautiful. Whether you are visiting for a weekend from Sydney or Canberra, or you are a local looking for a great night out, a sunset cruise is one of those experiences that stays with you.
Both cruises require you to collect your boarding pass 30 minutes prior to departure from Fishermens Wharf in Huskisson. Spots do book out, so we recommend securing yours online ahead of time. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We would love to have you on board.

Planning a 3 day South Coast itinerary from Sydney? This guide centres on Jervis Bay and Huskisson, combining beaches, wildlife, coastal walks and local dining without overpacking your schedule.

Day 1: Sydney to Jervis Bay - Arrive & Settle In

Leave Sydney mid-morning and head south along the Princes Highway. The drive to Jervis Bay takes around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. Base yourself in Huskisson. It is compact, easy to walk and close to most tours and beaches.

Afternoon: First Swim or Coastal Walk

After check-in, head straight to the water.

Hyams Beach for a swim and soft white sand.

Blenheim Beach if you prefer something quieter.

If you want to stretch your legs, drive into Booderee National Park and walk part of the White Sands Walk. Even a short section gives you coastal views and a sense of the landscape. If you’re planning beach time across the weekend, explore more of Jervis Bay’s best beaches before you arrive.

Dinner: A Strong First Night in Huskisson

For your first evening, keep it central.

Wildginger, Refined but relaxed
Asian-inspired share plates and good local wine. This is a reliable choice if you want a slightly elevated dinner without anything formal.

Pasta Buoy, Casual Italian after the beach
Fresh pasta, wood-fired options and a relaxed dining room. It suits couples or small groups.

Huskisson Hotel, Classic pub option
Upstairs for views across the water, downstairs for something casual. Good seafood and an easy first night.

After dinner, take a short walk along the Husky foreshore before heading back to your accommodation.

Day 2: Wildlife, Coffee & Coastal Activities

This is the day that makes Jervis Bay stand out.

Morning Coffee or Breakfast

If you are heading out on the water early, keep it simple.

Espresso Boy, Quick, consistent coffee and ideal if you want takeaway before walking down to the marina.

5 Little Pigs, Well-known locally for proper breakfast plates that will carry you through the morning.

Mid-Morning: Join a Jervis Bay Wild Cruise

Choose the experience that suits your weekend:

Dolphin Watching Cruise, Operating year round, this is one of the most reliable ways to see Jervis Bay’s resident dolphin population up close.

Jervis Bay Passage, A scenic cruise exploring the wider bay with commentary on the coastline, history and marine life.

South Coast Passage, A longer coastal journey venturing beyond the inner bay for broader ocean views and a different perspective of the South Coast.

Experiencing the coastline from the water gives you a view you simply cannot get from the shore and is often the highlight of a long weekend in Jervis Bay.

Lunch: Keep It Coastal

After your cruise, stay around the Huskisson wharf and waterfront.

For something substantial, head to Huskisson Hotel for seafood and water views, or walk up the street to Bud’s Tavern for a relaxed pub-style lunch.

If you prefer something lighter, pick up fresh oysters or takeaway from Jervis Bay Shellfish Market and eat by the water.

Afternoon: Explore by Water or E-Bike

After lunch, stay active without rushing.

Hire a kayak or SUP and explore the calm waters of the bay at your own pace. Paddling around the shoreline gives you access to quieter sections you cannot reach by car.

If you would rather stay on land, hire an e-bike and ride along the Huskisson foreshore or further towards Vincentia. The coastal path makes it easy to cover more ground without committing to a full hike.

Leave space in the afternoon. The South Coast works best when you don’t rush it.

Evening: Make It the Highlight Night

For a Special Occasion, The Gunyah Restaurant
Located at Paperbark Camp, this is one of the most distinctive dining experiences in the region. Set among the trees and slightly removed from town, it suits a slower, more considered dinner. Ideal if you’re celebrating or want one refined evening. Book ahead on long weekends.

For Something Different

Stonegrill, Cook your steak or seafood on a hot stone at the table. Good for groups and something a little different.

Taj Indian Restaurant, A solid Indian option if you want a change from seafood and share plates.

Drinks After Dinner

If you are not ready to call it a night, head to Jervis Bay Brewing Co for craft beer and a relaxed atmosphere. It is a brewery first rather than a full restaurant, making it better suited to drinks after dinner.

Alternatively, Flaming Galah Brewing Co offers a more intimate bar setting with a strong tap list and regular live music. It works well if you prefer something smaller and slightly removed from the main strip.

Both are easy Saturday night stops after dinner and keep the evening social without feeling overplanned.

Day 3: A Relaxed Morning & Scenic Drive North

Morning: Foreshore Walk Before You Leave

Before packing up, take a slow walk along the Huskisson to Vincentia coastal path. The shared foreshore track follows the water and gives you open views across Jervis Bay without committing to a full bushwalk.

Walk as far as you like, or continue towards Plantation Point for wide views back across the bay. It is an easy way to spend your last hour by the water before heading home.

Grab a final coffee in town, then pack up.

Afternoon: Lunch & Scenic Drive Back to Sydney

Plan to leave early afternoon to avoid heavy traffic heading back to Sydney.

If you would like to break up the drive, stop in Gerringong for headland views overlooking Werri Beach. For lunch, try The Blue Goose for relaxed café-style plates or The Hill Bar and Kitchen for ocean views and a longer sit-down meal.

Alternatively, continue slightly further north to Kiama to see the Blowhole and walk along the coastal path. In town, Diggies Kiama overlooks Surf Beach, while Penny Whistlers sits near the harbour and works well for a relaxed lunch before the final stretch home.

Stopping for lunch on the way north makes the return journey feel like part of the weekend rather than simply the drive home.

7 Spots Not to Miss in New South Wales

Australia is a country filled with countless iconic spots. From east to west, there are varied landscapes, vistas, and cultural treasures to be enjoyed. It’s hard to know exactly which destinations are a “must-see” when there are so many wonderful places to discover, and when you may have limited travel time. Fortunately, we’re here to help you narrow down your NSW itinerary. For the rest of Australia, you might need to check out some additional resources. In no particular order, here are our picks for 7 great spots not to miss in New South Wales.

1. The Blue Mountains

A short way east from Sydney you’ll find the incredible Blue Mountains. The rugged wilderness is a fantastic escape from city life. Hiking on the region’s trails, exploring majestic waterfalls, and visiting the mountains’ surrounding towns makes for a dreamy getaway.

2. Sydney

No trip to Australia is complete with a visit to Sydney Harbour for a view overlooking the iconic Sydney Opera House. There is so much more to do in Sydney as well, with museums, shopping, dining, and sightseeing. Don’t miss taking a ferry for one of the best and most memorable experiences in NSW. Feeling adventurous? You can climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge with a safe, professional tour company.

3. Byron Bay

If you’ve come to Australia for stunning beaches, Byron Bay is a hot spot for sure. Well known for awesome surfing, Byron is also a creative and artsy town. Explore the local markets, enjoy one of the many festivals that come to town, and listen to some live music in the evenings. If you’ve never surfed before, this is a great opportunity to give it a try with a surfing lesson.

4. Hunter Valley

Experience a taste of the NSW countryside with a visit to Hunter Valley. Shopping, spas, walking, golf, and more: all of these activities are even better amidst the quaint backdrop of the Hunter Valley. Most of all, Hunter Valley is known for its plentiful wineries. Take a tour of the region and sample some of the finest varietals produced right here in NSW.

5. Broken Hill

Your NSW might focus on our glorious coast, but inland has its own share of wonderful sites. Broken Hill is a great destination for those looking for a genuine Australian Outback experience. Here you’ll find wide open landscapes with a distant horizon. Mining tours and museums are open for visitors, where you can learn about the region’s major industry; the world’s largest silver, lead and zinc mine is right here in Broken Hill. There are also plenty of art galleries (many celebrating the Aboriginal cultures), restaurants, and other points of interest.

6. Jervis Bay

Of course, one of NSW’s (nay, Australia’s) most beloved spots is Jervis Bay. Boasting some of the finest white sand beaches on earth, as well as abundant historic and cultural sites, outdoor activities, and watersports, Jervis Bay is a fantastic destination for family holidays, romantic getaways, and more. There’s a lot to keep you busy during your time in this fabulous region, but the #1 must-do is a wildlife-focused eco cruise. When you book with Jervis Bay Wild, you can choose from tours such as our famous dolphin cruise, whale watching experience, or the unique South Coast Passage.

7. Lord Howe Island

You can still explore NSW when you’re not on Australia’s mainland. Beautiful Lord Howe Island is a must see when travelling in New South Wales. This fairly tiny island is just a 2 hour flight from Sydney, but you’ll be transported to a tropical paradise. No more than 400 guests can visit the island at any one time, so you’ll enjoy a secluded and blissful getaway snorkelling, swimming, and relaxing.

Ready to plan your holiday to New South Wales? Make sure you add a Jervis Bay cruise to your itinerary.

At Jervis Bay Wild, we are famous for our exciting cruises showcasing the amazing wildlife and spectacular scenery of New South Wales. Our whale watching, dolphin cruises, and more are all very popular options among locals and visitors alike. Cruising along the bay at any time of year, you can take in beautiful landscapes, spot fascinating marine and bird life, and simply enjoy a great day out on the water.

But perhaps you are looking for something a little different this summer school holiday season? Maybe you and the family are after a wetter, wilder ride for your next Jervis Bay adventure? Then let us suggest our summer boom netting tours!

Boom-whatting?

Every year, from November to April, Jervis Bay Wild offers our summer boom netting tours, and the December school holidays are the perfect time to give it a go. If you are not familiar with the concept, boom netting involves riding securely in a large net attached to the rear of the boat as we cruise through the waters of Jervis Bay. Our ample net can comfortably hold a sizeable group, so you and your friends and family can all have this unique experience together.

On your day out with us, you will enjoy time up on deck, and when the moment is right, you can move down into the boom net, positioned directly in the water. You are sure to get wet on this exciting ride as the waves surge past you, so hold on tight! Boom netting is a real adventure, and one that kids absolutely love.

In addition to the ride itself, you will learn about the history and cultural significance of Jervis Bay from our friendly, highly trained tour guides. You will see the towering sea cliffs at Point Perpendicular and cruise past some of the whitest, sandiest beaches in the world. Wildlife is abundant throughout the journey, and the resident bottlenose dolphins that call Jervis Bay home are certain to make an appearance. They may even race alongside you as you ride in the boom net, which is truly something special.

Ready? Set? Boom Net!

So what are you waiting for? Tours depart twice daily during the summer school holiday period, at 10:30am and 1:00pm from our wharf in Huskisson. Be sure to arrive 15 minutes early to secure your spot. Spots fill up fast over the December and January holidays, so we recommend booking online ahead of time. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We would love to see you out on the water this summer!

So you’ve booked your cruise with Jervis Bay. Get ready for a few hours of fun in the sun, taking in gorgeous scenery and some very exciting wildlife sightings. After all, that’s what our eco cruises are about, having a great adventure and experiencing some of Australia’s coolest marine wildlife in their natural habitat.

The first challenge is choosing which Jervis Bay eco tour to book. If you’ve made the decision to come along for a dolphin cruise, you’re in luck. This is one of our best and most popular tours (though of course every cruise we offer is pretty awesome). Once you’re booked in, it is time to start planning your visit. We have a few resources you can check out to plan where to stay, where to eat in Jervis Bay, and what to do. But on a very practical level, what should you bring with you for your dolphin cruise or other eco tour? We’ve laid out a simple checklist below.

Bottled Water

Staying hydrated is vital when you’re outside in the strong Australian sun. We recommend bringing a full water bottle with you onboard. Though snacks and drinks are available for purchase on our vessels, come prepared with your water bottle so you can feel your best throughout the journey.

A Light Sweater or Jacket

New South Wales may be generally sunny and warm, but out on the water, temperatures can cool. The natural sea breeze is often quite brisk, and there is also the chance of a bit of sea spray at times. We at Jervis Bay Wild want you to be your most comfortable during your experience with us. We highly recommend bringing a warm item of clothing in case it becomes brisk out on the water. This is especially helpful on cloudy or windy days. Suggested apparel includes a light sweater, sweatshirt, or flannel. We provide spray jackets for our guests.

Sunnies, a Hat, and Suncream

Sun protection is no joke! Keep your skin safe by applying suncream prior to your departure. A hat will also help to keep the sun off your face and out of your eyes, and can also guard against messy hair in the sea winds. Sunnies are also suggested as the sun’s reflection on the water can be bright or glaring. A good pair of sunglasses will protect your eyes and ensure you are able to spot all those exciting wildlife sightings!

Your Camera

The memories you make on your dolphin cruise or other eco tour are those you’ll want to remember and share with others. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture them. The camera you bring along is at your discretion, but many of our guests find that their phones or GoPro cameras work best. If possible, bring a waterproof covering/case, to guard against sea sprays.

A Towel & Swimwear (Summer Boom Netting Only)

Our dolphin tour is not a chance to swim with the wildlife, unfortunately, so you can leave your bathers at home. If you are looking to get wet and have fun in the sea, however, then our summer boom netting cruise will be right up your alley. Boom netting is all about splishing and splashing so be sure to pack your swimwear and a towel for this occasion.

An Appetite for Adventure

On any of our Jervis Bay cruises, you’ll want to bring a positive attitude and an appetite for adventure. Every cruise is different and each time we head out on the water is unique, too. We never know exactly what wildlife we’ll see (though we’re confident you’ll nearly always have a sighting). So come onboard with patience and excitement and we promise we’ll deliver the best experience we possibly can.

See you soon!

A weekend getaway is a perfect amount of time to delve into the very best Jervis Bay has to offer. With our 48 hour itinerary (give or take a few hours!), you’ll be prepared to make the most of those few days in the region. Read on for your weekend plans!

Friday Evening

You’ll arrive in the Jervis Bay region in the early evening. After checking into one of the area’s best accommodation options, you can head out to enjoy a relaxing dinner. Let’s keep it casual on Friday night. Tonight, you’ll be dining at Peter Eva for pizza and pasta. This laidback eatery is BYO, so grab a great wine from the local shop and pop in for dinner. Then, get a good night’s rest for a busy day on Saturday.

Saturday

You’ll be rising a bit early to get a head start on an adventure-filled day! You’ll head into Huskisson for breakfast and coffee at the Hyams Beach Cafe. This is a popular local spot where you can depend on a yummy bite to fuel you up. Then it’s off to the Jervis Bay Wild homebase to get on board for your eco cruise! You’ll be heading out mid-morning on a dolphin cruise, whale watch, or perhaps on the South Coast Passage, the choice is yours.

You’ll spend a couple of hours seeing the delights of coastal Jervis Bay. From towering sea cliffs to stunning beaches, the natural beauty will dance before your eyes. And of course, there will be plenty of wildlife sightings. What an adventure!

Upon your return, you can enjoy a delicious lunch right at Jervis Bay Wild’s own dockside cafe. A great menu, and awesome views, await.

Now it’s time to stretch your legs. You can choose either to hire bikes and enjoy a cycle around Huskisson, or take a stroll down the White Sands Walk. Both allow you the chance to take in more of the nature in our region.

Following your walk or your cycle ride, get ready to explore a bit of downtown Huskisson. Book shops, antique stores, and art galleries invite you to browse (and maybe pick up a souvenir). There’s also the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, an excellent choice for history buffs.

As the day winds down, you’ll head back to your accommodation to rest and refresh. Dinner is next!

Saturday Dinner

We recommend having your splurge dinner on Saturday night. There are many great local choices, but for a truly unique experience, we suggest heading out to The Gunyah Restaurant at Paperbark Camp. This is superb dining with a rotating menu and an incredible ambiance. Set up in the treetops and lit by candles, this is a meal that will be truly romantic and memorable.

Sunday

Hope you had a great night’s sleep! Today will be a bit less action packed, but you’ll still get the chance to see some of the best of Jervis Bay.

After breakfast (why not check out Huskisson Bakery & Cafe for some fresh pies?), you’ll be going to the beach! The white sand shores of Jervis Bay are a must-see. Get ready to spend a few hours oceanside. You could even pack a picnic. Choose from one of the top beaches and have fun! Don’t forget the suncream.

Next on the docket is a laidback afternoon of wine tasting. The region boasts many tempting wineries, and it’s easy to do a self-drive tour, or you can sign up for a guided excursion. The choice is yours. Pick out a bottle of your favourite to bring home.

Departure

And now it’s just about time to pack up and leave. You’ve done a lot in only a couple of days, and made amazing memories. Safe travels back home! And don’t forget, Jervis Bay is always there for your next visit!

Why Visit Jervis Bay In Winter

While Jervis Bay is well-known for its summer holidays, winter offers a slower, quieter experience with just as much to see and do. The water is calm, the trails are peaceful, and it’s the best time to head out and spot whales along the coast. If you’re planning a winter weekend away, here’s how to make the most of your time.

Start Your Trip With A Whale Cruise

One of the best things to do in Jervis Bay this time of year is join a whale watching cruise. Between May and November, migrating humpback whales pass right by the bay, often putting on a show as they move north.

Jervis Bay Wild’s Whale Watching Tour is a relaxed way to experience this from the water. You’ll head out with experienced guides who know exactly where to look. The boat is covered for weather, but it’s always best to bring something warm.

Explore The Bay On An E-Bike

After a morning on the water, the rest of the day is perfect for exploring Huskisson and the surrounding areas on an e-bike. It’s a great way to get around without the hassle of parking, and there are plenty of paths and coastal spots to check out.

If you’re keen to stretch your legs further, take a look at some of the walks we’ve covered in our Top Bushwalks Around Jervis Bay. Many of these tracks are quieter during winter, giving you time to take in the views at your own pace.

Local Dining For Cold Weather Days

After a day outdoors, there are plenty of cosy spots in Huskisson to settle in for dinner. Here are a few options to consider:

Wild Ginger, modern Asian with a great cocktail menu

The Huskisson Hotel, classic pub meals with water views

The Alibi, small bar with good food and a relaxed feel

Pasta Buoy, casual and well-priced handmade pasta

Peter Eva, seasonal menu with thoughtful dishes in a refined setting

Most are within walking distance of the main street, making it easy to head out without planning ahead.

Visit Booderee Botanic Gardens

On Sunday, take a drive into Booderee National Park and visit the Botanic Gardens. Entry is included with your park pass, and it’s a peaceful way to spend the morning. The gardens are home to native plants, birds, and walking paths, and are one of the only Aboriginal-owned botanic gardens in Australia.

You won’t need long, just enough time for a slow walk, a few photos, and a moment to take it all in before heading back into town.

Before You Head Home

Round out your weekend with a coffee from Espresso Boy, Salty Joe’s, or 5 Little Pigs, then wander through the shops along Owen Street. If you’re after something a little quieter, Supply Jervis Bay is another good option. There are a handful of local stores offering books, homewares, and handmade goods, which make for an easy last stop before the drive home.

Planning Your Winter Weekend

Jervis Bay is just as rewarding in winter, offering the chance to see migrating whales, explore the coast by e-bike, and enjoy the slower pace of the South Coast. If you’re looking to add something extra to your weekend, Jervis Bay Wild’s range of cruises runs throughout the season, each offering a different way to experience the bay and its wildlife.

If you’re after a place to stay, Jervis Bay Weekender offers a selection of holiday homes, cottages and apartment-style options across the area.

Check availability in advance and consider booking your cruise or hire online to make the most of your visit.

It’s no secret that we love whales here in Jervis Bay. From May to November, the impressive and majestic humpbacks can be seen making their way past our coastline as part of their lengthy annual migration. We’re so lucky to have the opportunity to see whales in the area during these months, and to get up fairly close to them on our whale watching tours. In November, visitors are often fortunate enough to spot nursing baby whales and their mothers right here in the bay.

Humpback whales live approximately 45-50 years, which means they will make their yearly migration dozens of times. What else happens during these years? Let’s take a look at the life cycle of the humpback whale.

The Baby Humpback Whale

Born in warmer waters, baby humpbacks have a better chance for survival. When they arrive, they can weigh as much as one ton, and are generally 3-5m in length. For the first year of their life, they will remain by their mother’s side. They nurse on her high-fat milk for at least 5 months and often as long as a year. Drinking between 2 and 10% of their weight daily in milk, the young humpbacks grow rapidly to 8 or 9m. The mama humpback will stay with baby in warm, protected waters until growth is complete and he or she is ready to be on his or her own.

The Growing Humpback

Adolescent humpbacks begin to travel with other groups or in pairs. Before they begin mating, their lives largely consist of feeding. They eat by filter feeding through their baleen plates. Preying primarily on small fish, plankton, and krill, the average humpback whale consumes 2000-2500 kg of food per day. Sometimes, whales in pods will hunt using a technique known as the “bubble net,” in which bubble slowly released from their blowholes form a “net” to gather their prey.

The Humpback as an Adult

Around 6-10 years of age, a humpback whale becomes sexually mature. Now it is time to start breeding. Males at reproductive age are between 12 and 16m in length. Females measure roughly 14-15 but may grow as large as 18m!

To attract a mate, male humpbacks display their prowess through breaching, blowing bubbles, singing, and occasionally clashing with other males. Once a pair has decided to mate, they will swim together and move in motions like diving and rolling that resemble a playful courtship. Their beautiful baby whale is born about a year later, by the time they’ve made the long swim to more temperate regions. An adult female humpback does not give birth every single year, but typically every two or three years.

See For Yourself

If you want the best whale watching views in the region, we’d love to have you onboard with Jervis Bay Wild! We go out 365 days per year and our whale eco tours during whale season offer exceptional sightings. Book today or contact us for more information on the whale eco tour or another of our eco cruise opportunities.

Seen from May to November in Jervis Bay, the humpback whale is an amazing ocean mammal. In the southern hemisphere, humpback whales migrate northward during the winter months, leaving the cold seas of the Antarctic behind and heading towards the warmer waters surrounding Australia. Visitors to our coast are lucky enough to be treated to excellent views of these magnificent animals, passing by in the hundreds.

Ever since the days of tales like Moby Dick, whales have seemed mysterious, powerful creatures of the deep. While no longer a mystery, humpback whales are still fascinating and have many unusual qualities. Here are some facts you probably didn’t know about humpback whales:

Not All Humpback Whales Sing

The humpback whale may be known for its distinctive and almost mournful song, but the truth is, not all humpbacks sing. The wide variety of hums, moans, and whistles is actually only performed by male humpbacks, with some debate about the ultimate purpose of these vocalisations. While these sounds are able to be heard and picked up by other whales miles away, scientists are still not entirely sure why humpback whales sing. The most likely theory is that whale song is related to mating or positional communication between male humpbacks. Interestingly, whales in a given area perform the same song, but it changes slowly over time.

Humpbacks Must Remember to Breathe

Whales are mammals and breathe air just like humans. However, while we breathe automatically, humpback whales breathe voluntarily. And while their lengthy dive time (the average whale can hold its breath underwater for about 60 minutes) might suggest that whales can breathe underwater, this is not true. Whales draw breath through the blowhole on the top of their heads and must surface, albeit not a lot, in order to breathe.

Since they must breathe on their own, you might wonder how whales sleep at night. Scientists believe that the whales keep part of their brain engaged while they sleep, allowing them to continue breathing while still getting some shut-eye.

Humpback whales are the most acrobatic whales

This fact may not be as much of a secret, since the impressive tricks of the humpback draw people near and far for whale watching. Breaching and tail slapping are just a few of the ways in which humpbacks fly through the air (seemingly with the greatest of ease!). Researchers think that these activities play a role in communication for the whales or may help them loosen some of the many barnacles that have grown attached to their skin. A further school of thought holds that the whales do these movements simply for sheer joy!

Now that you’re an expert on humpback whales, it’s about time you came to see these beautiful mammals for yourself! Our whale eco cruise (whale watching tour) departs daily from mid-May until November.

It’s May, and in Jervis Bay, that can only mean one thing: the start of whale watching season. From May until November, the waters of Jervis Bay are graced by the presence of hundreds of humpback whales, making the slow journey north towards milder waters. Even after years of spotting the magnificent humpbacks moving through our oceans, it is still an absolute thrill to see them. Every whale watching experience is utterly different and unique, and at Jervis Bay Wild, we absolutely love whale watching. If you’ve never been out on one of our whale eco-cruises, it’s time you came along and discovered what all the fuss is about.

Who?, The Mighty Humpback

A favourite for wildlife spotting, these massive mammals are well known for their extreme annual migrations. The humpback is a fascinating animal with many unique characteristics. Every year, the humpback whales consistently move the furthest of any animal species. Whales that inhabit the Southern Hemisphere move north during the winter months, allowing young humpback whales to be born in more temperate oceans. The whales swim slowly, at a speed of roughly 2km per hour, giving us ample opportunity to catch up with them as they go.

What?, An Encounter with Nature

Our whale eco cruises offer the best whale watching experience available in Jervis Bay. For two hours, you’ll explore the stunning cliffs, caves, and beaches of the bay, as you glide through turquoise waters seeking the whales. As you pass the cliffs of Point Perpendicular and sail into open waters, you will spot your first whale, a thrilling experience that will find your heart racing in your chest. The sight of the humpback whales jumping and splashing in the waves or forcefully expelling water from their spots is an incredible experience with the marine world. You’re almost guaranteed to catch a glimpse of other local wildlife as well, including birds, sharks, rays, and of course, our resident bottlenose dolphins.

When?, May Through November

Our whale watching cruise is available twice daily throughout our winter months, departing at 10:30am and 1:00pm. With an excellent spotting record, you have an extremely high chance of seeing whales on your cruise. Later on in the season, a natural lagoon on the itinerary, Honeymoon Bay, will provide some memorable sightings of baby humpbacks, remaining close to their mothers as they nurse. When you join us for your cruise, don’t forget your camera, as the photo opportunities are unmatched on this tour.

We Heart Humpbacks

The sea breeze in your hair. The warm sun on your skin. Whales just a few metres away. There really is nothing like the experience of whale watching in Jervis Bay.
Ready for an adventure? Book your eco cruise today.
