Fun & Sun Safety Tips from Jervis Bay Wild

As we venture into the warmest season of the year, it is more important than ever to be mindful of staying safe in the bright, hot sun. Even throughout the year, sunshine is abundant in NSW, and at Jervis Bay Wild, we know the importance of protecting your skin and your body from its potential harmful effects.

Whether you’re coming with us on one of our exciting eco-cruises, getting ready for a strenuous bush walk, or planning a day spent on one of Jervis Bay’s most popular beaches, follow these tips to stay safe in the fun and sun.

Stay protected.

One of the threats of excessive exposure to the sun is the potential damage it can do to your skin. Over time, overexposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun (or those found in artificial tanning beds) can cause damage and even cancer. Fortunately, for skin cancers, including melanoma, sun exposure is one of the most preventable risk factors. With the right approach, you can limit the harm the sun’s powerful rays can inflict on your body.

Sunscreen is Vital

Sunscreen should be worn by everyone spending time outdoors. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still penetrate the clouds and pose a threat. Children’s skin is especially vulnerable.

The recommended sunscreen is a water-resistant, broad spectrum cream (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with at least an SPF of 30. You should reapply every two hours and be extra cautious when in areas of water or sand where the sun can be highly reflective. We recommend sunscreen for every guest coming on an eco cruise with us. Put it on 20 minutes before going into the sun and reapply throughout the day.

Other steps

Sunscreen is a must-have, but when possible, you should physically protect your skin with the proper clothing. Wear brimmed hats to protect the sensitive skin of your scalp and face, and wear long-sleeves in the appropriate situation.
When endeavouring on a bush walk or hike, long sleeves of the right material can actually serve to keep you most cool and afford you the highest level of sun protection.

Stay hydrated.

It’s important for the health of your skin and for your overall body to remain hydrated. The heat of the summer and the rays of the sun can be dehydrating and exhausting. Keep drinking water all through the day. If you’re heading out for a long period of activity, consider bringing extra water along.

Plan wisely.

If you’re spending time enjoying the outdoors, it will be impossible to avoid the sun entirely. Instead, plan ahead with the right preparation (clothing and sunscreen) and also consider other factors when planning activities. The hottest time of the day is typically midday, with the sun’s rays shining most strongly between 10am and 4pm. Exercise extra caution during these times, or plan for your activities to take place earlier or later than these times. When the sun is high, seek shade when possible and make sure to reapply your sunscreen around every 2 hours.

With these tips, you’ll be enjoying fun in the sun…and hopefully with Jervis Bay Wild!
